MEPs adopted a resolution on the human rights situation in North Korea on Thursday 7 April. In particular, they condemn the persecution of religious minorities in the country. In the text, MEPs call on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to “put an end” to these crimes, which include extermination, murder, enslavement, imprisonment, rape and other persecution “on political, religious, racial or gender grounds”.
Furthermore, they encourage China and Russia “not to deny North Korean refugees who cross the border into China and Russia their right to seek asylum” in accordance with the UN Refugee Convention.
The Parliament calls on the members of the United Nations (UN) to “implement in full” the UN Security Council sanctions and to make efforts to bring the situation in North Korea before the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Finally, it condemns the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile from North Korea into the Sea of Japan on 24 March. The European External Action Service had also condemned the launch (see EUROPE 12919/20).
