The European Parliament adopted a resolution (488 votes in favour, 1 against and 2 abstentions) on human rights in Afghanistan, in particular on women’s rights, on Thursday 7 April.
MEPs condemn “in the strongest possible terms the Taliban’s decision to postpone indefinitely the return to school of girls over the age of six”.
They call on the Taliban to reverse their decision and also to form a government that includes women in decision-making at all levels. The protection of people fleeing Afghanistan must also be ensured by the EU Member States, according to the Parliament.
The MEP, Hannah Neumann (Greens/EFA, Germany), called on the EU to protect Afghan girls by allowing them to go to school abroad: “If the EU can raise a billion euros to send weapons to Ukraine, and believe me, I am all for it, why not do the same to evacuate people at risk in Afghanistan?”, she stressed in front of her colleagues on 6 April.
“We will continue to facilitate women’s active and meaningful participation in the dialogue on the future of Afghanistan and we will not accept that girls do not have access to quality education”, said the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.
