On Wednesday 6 April, the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee called on the European Union to grant Moldova EU candidate status.
“Whatever the EU offers to Ukraine, it should also offer to Moldova”, stressed co-chair Siegfried Mureșan (EPP, Romania).
MEPs also called for an acceleration of Moldova’s integration into the EU Single Market. According to Moldovan Vice President Mihail Popșoi, over 70% of Moldovan products are already exported to the EU. “Moldova could export more and there could be more European investment”, said Mr Mureșan.
The Parliamentary Association Committee also calls on the European Commission to set up a support group for Moldova, to provide further assistance. MEPs add that additional financial support should be given to the country, and Mr Popșoi says that the deficit of his country - which is currently hosting many Ukrainian refugees - is growing.
Finally, MEPs say that Member States should cooperate with the Moldovan authorities in investigating the banking system following the 2014 fraud on assets allegedly held by them.
