20/09/2021 (Agence Europe) – The EU is calling on Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble to end the current political stalemate, said the EU head of diplomacy, Josep Borrell, on Saturday 18 September, the day upon which the UN Security Council called on both men to start a dialogue. “The electoral process should continue to be conducted in a peaceful manner, in accordance with the previously agreed timeframe of 27 May. This is essential for the well-being of the people in Somali. All Somali stakeholders must exercise the maximum restraint for the overall stability of Somalia and the region”, he said in a statement issued on behalf of the EU-27. At the end of May, the Somali government had announced that elections would be held within 60 days (see EUROPE 12729/31), but the election cycle that due to start on 25 July was postponed. (AN)
