Member States meet to discuss revision of EU’s renewable energy and energy efficiency directives

The Energy Ministers of the EU Member States and Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson will meet in Kranj, Slovenia, on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 September for an informal meeting to discuss, among other things, the proposed revisions to the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive (2018/2001) and the Energy Efficiency Directive (2018/2002).

Both debates will take place on Wednesday morning, preceded by a meeting of the High Level Group on Central and South-Eastern Europe Energy Connectivity (CESEC) on Tuesday 21 afternoon.

Wednesday will continue with a joint meeting of energy ministers with their transport counterparts and Commissioner for Transport Adina Vălean to discuss issues related to the development of alternative fuel infrastructure and the functioning of the internal energy market.

Presented by the European Commission on 14 July, the proposals for revising the RED II and Energy Efficiency Directives are part of the ‘Fit for 55’ package, which is designed to enable the EU to achieve a reduction in its net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels (see EUROPE 12762/8).
