20/09/2021 (Agence Europe) – Reacting to the 19 September eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain), the EU activated the Copernicus emergency service to monitor the area today with the Sentinel2 satellite, the European Commission announced on 20 September. Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič said on his Twitter account that the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), the pivotal body of the EU’s 24/7 civil protection mechanism, “is in contact with the Spanish civil protection authorities”. He added, “We stand ready to assist further”. This requires the Spanish authorities to submit a request for assistance to the EU’s civil protection mechanism, which can help any country in difficulty, inside or outside the EU. (AN)
