20/09/2021 (Agence Europe) – As predicted in EU Council documents (see EUROPE 12793/2), the EU and the US announced their support for the Global Methane Pledge, an initiative to reduce global methane emissions by at least 30% by 2030 from 2020 levels, on Saturday 18 September during the US-hosted ‘Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate’. “Rapidly reducing methane emissions (...) is regarded as the single most effective strategy to reduce global warming in the near term”, says the joint statement issued by the European Commission. According to the document, achieving this target would reduce global warming by at least 0.2°C by 2050. In addition to the EU and the US, seven countries have already indicated their support for this global commitment: Argentina, Ghana, Indonesia, Iraq, Italy, Mexico and the UK.
