28/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 28 May, the European Union welcomed the successful conclusion of talks the previous day between Somali federal and regional leaders as “an important step towards peaceful elections, in line with the 17 September Agreement”. The Somali government announced on Thursday that it would hold elections within 60 days. In a statement issued on behalf of the EU27, the High Representative Josep Borrell, welcomes Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble’s endeavours pursuing constructive deliberations between the federal and regional leaderships. “Elections should be held without delay”, Borrell said. He added, “In the next steps of the process, it is key that all parties continue the constructive engagement refraining from violence or any actions derailing the process. The EU stands ready to continue our support.” (AN)
