28/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 28 May, the High Representative of the Union, Josep Borrell, called for an update of the July 2016 joint declaration between the EU and NATO. “We may need to review the joint declaration [...] which is approaching its fifth anniversary, reflecting our strategic priorities, which in 5 years have changed a lot”, he said at the end of an informal meeting of EU Defence Ministers in Lisbon. The day before, the ministers had dinner with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. Mr Borrell added that they might work on a new declaration, “depending on the will and need of the assessment of new threats and challenges that both the EU and NATO are facing”. Mr Stoltenberg, for his part, called for intensified and strengthened cooperation between the two organisations, particularly on resilience and climate change. (CG)
