On Monday 10 May, the Council of the EU adopted the regulation on the export regime for dual-use items, which will control exports of products that have both civilian and military uses.
This regulation will replace the 2009 regulation and will allow for the inclusion within its scope of products related to cyber-surveillance and emerging technologies.
MEPs approved the text on 26 March (see EUROPE 12668/15).
The adoption was welcomed by Finance Minister João Leão of Portugal, which holds the rotating Presidency of the EU Council. “Strong controls will allow us to prevent human rights violations and abuses, while keeping up with the latest technological developments”, he said.
The regulation will enter into force 90 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU.
