On Friday 7 May, the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union sent Member States new draft conclusions on the EU’s ‘Renovation Wave’ strategy.
There are very few changes from the previous version (see EUROPE 12700/8).
While the new text still calls on the European Commission to “prepare for the phasing out of the least efficient electricity, gas and other fossil-fuel-operated heating and cooling appliances”, the words “as soon as possible” have been removed from its wording.
Stressing the importance of both ecodesign and environmental and energy labelling measures to “facilitate the phasing out of fossil fuel-operated appliances”, the new draft conclusions now specify “in the most cost- efficient way”.
The Portuguese Presidency is aiming for the Council to adopt these conclusions on Friday 11 June, during the next meeting of the Member States’ energy ministers (‘Energy Council’).
