16/10/2020 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament’s committee of inquiry on the protection of animals during transport held its first meeting on Friday 16 October, devoted to an exchange of views with Claire Bury, Deputy Director-General for Food Safety of the European Commission. Ms Bury considered that the regulation (1/2005) on the protection of animals during transport ensured a “high” level of compliance with EU rules when transport takes place within the EU. Nevertheless, “improvements are needed, particularly as regards the export of animals to non-Member States, especially during the warmer summer period”, she admitted. The Commission is working on a review of the legislation. The debate showed “the degree of complexity of the subject”, stressed commission chair Tilly Metz (Greens/EFA, Luxembourg). (LC)
