The European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs on Thursday 15 October called on companies receiving State aid, EU or other public funds as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic to maintain jobs, pay a fair share of taxes, commit to sustainability goals and refrain from paying dividends, in a draft resolution by Joachim Schuster (S&D, Germany).
The resolution, which will be adopted at the next plenary session of Parliament, calls for spending by Member States to revive their economies affected by the Covid-19 pandemic to focus on the fight against climate change and the digital transition. The European Commission is invited to study how to better finance a just transition to a carbon-neutral economy, according to a Parliament press release.
Concerned about the inevitable increase in public deficits and public debt, MEPs also call on the EU Council and the Commission to put in place, as of 2021, new own resources to feed into the EU’s 2021-2017 Multiannual Financial Framework. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
