16/10/2020 (Agence Europe) – The mayors of 58 European cities sent a letter to European Council President Charles Michel and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday 15 October, calling on Member States to raise the EU’s 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target to ‘at least 55%’. In addition, they call for the EU’s energy and climate objectives to be “legally binding at Member State level”. Stressing that cities can play a key role in this transition, the signatories call for support through EU funds and recovery policies to help them reach their even more ambitious target of a 65% reduction in emissions. On Thursday, the EU-27 agreed to return to the issue of raising the 2030 climate target in December. See the letter coordinated by Eurocities: https://bit.ly/37c2q91 (DG)
