Public consultation on implementation of EU rules on electronic identification

On Friday 24 July, the European Commission launched a public consultation on the application of the eIDAS Regulation (910/2014), which since 2018 has provided a framework for cross-border electronic identification, authentication and certification of websites within the EU (see EUROPE 11127/12).

The European institution wants to gather opinions from stakeholders - businesses and citizens - on the effectiveness of European rules, and to test the advisability of a legislative review taking into account the behavioural changes marked by the rapid development of e-commerce, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The revision aims to improve the effectiveness of the regulation, extend its benefits to the private sector, promote trusted digital identities for all Europeans and create a secure and interoperable European digital identity” over which citizens will retain control, said Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager.

Since February, citizens and businesses in eight Member States have been able to use their national electronic identity (eID) throughout the EU. From next year onwards, 55% of the EU population will be covered.
