Florika Fink-Hooijer and Gerassimos Thomas appointed head of ‘Environment’ and ‘Taxation’ Departments respectively

The European Commission announced the appointment, on Friday 24 July, of Florika Fink-Hooijer, a German lawyer, as Director-General of the Environment Department (DG ENVI) and Gerassimos Thomas, the current Greek Deputy Minister for Environment and Energy, as Director-General of the Taxation and Customs Union Department (DG TAXUD).

Both are well familiar with the European institution.

Mr Thomas, an economist by training, has notably worked as Deputy Director General of the Directorate General for Energy (DG ENER) from 2014 to 2019. Between 2005 and 2009, he served as Head of Cabinet of the Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs.

In the case of Florika Fink-Hooijer, this is an internal transfer, as she has been the Director General of the Interpretation Department (DG SCIC) since 2016.

From 2012 to 2016, she was Director for Strategy, Policy and International Cooperation in the Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (DG ECHO).

The College of Commissioners has also appointed two directors: - Nathalie Chaze, a French national, will be in charge of the Directorate ‘Food chain: stakeholders and international relations’ of the Directorate General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE); - Anne Montagnon, a French national, will become Director in the DG for Mobility and Transport (MOVE), at the Shared Resource Directorate for DG MOVE and DG ENER.
