“The mindset and culture in newsrooms” remain “issues that must be tackled in order for the media sector to contribute at its fullest to gender equality”, says an analytical report published on Friday 24 July by the Council of Europe’s Gender Equality Commission and the Steering Committee on Media and the Information Society.
The text indicates that progress has been made in terms of Member States’ legislation and highlights some good practices implemented at national level. However, it still identifies gaps in media coverage of gender equality and violence against women and persistent inequalities in the profession.
Other troubling indicators are the low representation of women in decision-making roles and the high level of violence against women journalists.
This report was drawn up on the basis of a questionnaire sent to Member States in 2019 to examine the progress made since the adoption of the Recommendation on Gender Equality and the Media in 2013.
