22/06/2020 (Agence Europe) – Hungary’s leading news website said on Sunday 21 June that it was in “serious danger” confronted with a restructuring project that could limit its ability to publish information critical of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, AFP reported. “Index.hu, one of the few remaining independent voices, is under external pressure that could lead to the end of our editorial in its current form”, wrote its editor in chief, Szabolcs Dull, in a statement. “The country’s largest news site is in serious danger”, he added. The site evokes, without giving details, a “proposal to reorganise the editorial staff” which “will determine in the coming days the fate of Index”. Media pluralism in the Member States is one of the principles that the European Commission wants to observe and take into account in its future annual report on the Rule of law. (SP)
