Reducing emissions by 65% by 2030 requires a rapid change in our lifestyle, Climact points out

Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 65% by 2030 is possible, but requires rapid action both in terms of technology deployment and lifestyle changes, says a report published on Monday 22 June by Climact, a consultancy organisation.

In terms of sectoral efforts to achieve such a reduction, the report indicates that the phase-out of coal should be accelerated to 25 TWh in 2030, in favour of renewable energies and without adding new gas capacity.

Other measures deemed necessary include reducing meat consumption by 32%, accelerating the deployment of electric vehicles so that they account for 93% of new sales by 2030, reducing traffic by 10% compared to 2015, and increasing the rate of building renovation to 3.5% per year.

Regarding the impact on the economy and employment, the report estimates that the financial and human costs of these efforts will be lower than the costs of climate damage if insufficient measures are taken.

While the EU currently aims to reduce emissions by 40% by 2030, the European Commission wants to raise this goal to -50% or -55%.

Jytte Guteland (S&D, Sweden), rapporteur on the European Parliament’s ‘Climate Law’, wants to raise this target to -65% (see EUROPE 12495/21).
