30/04/2020 (Agence Europe) – The ambassadors of the Member States to the European Union (Coreper) are believed to have initiated the procedure to punish those responsible for Daniel Ortega's regime in Nicaragua. This information, communicated on Thursday 30 April by a diplomatic source to EUROPE, could not be confirmed. On 23 April, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, noted that, 2 years after the start of the social protest, "no tangible progress" had been made in Nicaragua. "Repression by security forces (...) of political opponents, demonstrators, journalists, civil society organisations and members of the Catholic Church continues", he said. In October 2019, the Council of the EU adopted a regulatory framework for the imposition of targeted sanctions against persons and entities close to the Nicaraguan regime and responsible for human rights violations (see EUROPE 12348/3).
