Poland is considering a ‘Netflix tax’

30/04/2020 (Agence Europe)Poland plans to introduce a 1.5% surcharge on revenues of streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon and Apple TV+, Polish Finance Minister Tadeusz Kościński said on Wednesday 29 April. According to the Polish government, this additional levy could generate up to 3.3 million euros and this revenue would be paid directly to the Polish Film Institute. Containment measures have strengthened the position of these companies, which seem to have emerged as winners from the Covid-19 crisis. Netflix, for example, gained 15.8 million new subscribers between January and March. The Polish proposal has yet to be submitted to MEPs, but it could give ideas to other European countries. Several voices have been raised recently in favour of broad taxation of digital and for large companies, which particularly benefit from the Covid-19 crisis, to contribute to economic recovery. (MF)
