11/02/2020 (Agence Europe) – Polish diplomat Marek Szczygieł, was appointed by the ambassadors of the Political and Security Committee on Tuesday, 11 February, as head of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia, EUMM Georgia. His mandate, replacing the Dane Erik Høeg (see EUROPE 12163/23), will begin on 15 March and end on 14 December 2020. This date coincides with the end of the current EUMM mandate (see EUROPE 12151/29). The unarmed civilian mission, deployed in October 2008, contributes to stabilisation, normalisation and confidence-building among the parties to the conflict between Russia and Georgia. It ensures civilian surveillance of the actions of the parties, including compliance with the Agreement of 12 August 2008 and its implementing measures of 8 September 2008. (CG)
