11/02/2020 (Agence Europe) – The threat of sanctions did not bend Phnom Penh: while a decision by the European Commission is expected on Wednesday 12 February to penalise the regime of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen for human rights violations by suspending him from tariff privileges granted under the ‘Everything But Arms’ (EBA) initiative, the latter once again chose provocation. On Tuesday 11 February, he said “we have already tasted countless wars, tragedies they had made for us, but we are not dead”, according to the Reuters news agency. He added that Cambodia “will not bow to anyone”. However, the removal of the generous European tariff preferences could affect around one million employees in a country that is also suffering from the slowdown in the Chinese economy, which has been hit by the coronavirus epidemic.
