11/02/2020 (Agence Europe) – The Vice-President of the European Commission, Věra Jourová, reconfirmed her intention to legislate against hate speech on the Internet (see EUROPE 12352/7). In an interview published at the beginning of the week by the newspaper Le Soir, she said that "the time of gentleman's agreements with the tech giants is over". In support of her point, she takes the example of the Chinese video-sharing application Tik Tok which, unlike the others, has not made a sworn commitment to quickly remove hate content, which is illegal in Europe. "We need stable rules to ensure that illegal content doesn't thrive online". On the 'disinformation' aspect, she noted that the Commission was currently analysing the link between the business model of platforms and the proliferation of fake news. "I may be naive, but I believe that lies should not pay", Jourová concluded. (SPj)
