11/02/2020 (Agence Europe) – The President of the European Central Bank (ECB), Christine Lagarde, said on Tuesday 11 February, that the monetary institute had set up a task force in January to investigate "the opportunities and challenges associated with different potential designs for a central bank digital currency". We want to assess "whether a central bank digital currency could serve a clear purpose for the public and support the ECB’s objectives", she added during her first speech before the European Parliament in Strasbourg, in the context of a debate on the new challenges facing the ECB (see EUROPE 12422/14). This work is taking place in cooperation with five other central banks and the Bank for International Settlements, in particular on the issue of a cross-border partnership in the use of these central bank digital currencies.
