European Green Week in June will be dedicated to biodiversity within Green Deal framework

The European Commission’s annual ‘Green Week’, organised by the European Commission to provide an international platform for exchange on EU environmental policies and legislation, will focus on biodiversity from 1-5 June, the Commission announced on Monday 10 February, calling on all interested parties to participate.

The scale of the biodiversity crisis revealed by the IPBES assessment, the failures to meet the 2020 targets and the need to step up efforts in the context of the future EU 2030 strategy and the 15th UN Conference on Biological Diversity (COP15 in Kunming in October) will be at the heart of this event (see EUROPE 12422/1).

‘Green Week’ will raise awareness of the seriousness of the issue and highlight the need for urgent action, explore possible avenues for change and examine how the European Green Deal can help protect, restore and sustainably manage nature, giving it the chance to recover and prosper.

The event will be launched on 1 June in Lisbon and will culminate in a high-level conference in Brussels from 2 to 5 June. In parallel, a series of events and activities will be organised from 4 May to 14 June by partner organisations or cities in the EU Member States.
