T&E calls on Member States to increase use of renewable electricity for transport

In order to implement the European Renewable Energy Directive (‘RED II’) by June 2021, Member States should use more electricity from renewable energy sources for transport, according to a Transport & Environment (T&E) report published on Thursday 3 October.

The implementation [of RED II] offers an important opportunity to shift national policies away from an exclusive reliance on crop-based biofuels (especially palm oil) to a broader range of cleaner, advanced fuels”, contends T&E.

The organisation also points out that, according to estimates, Member States’ compliance with the EU’s target of reaching 32% renewable energy by 2030 will result in 54% renewable electricity by then.

Thus, T&E considers that the increasing share of renewable energies such as wind and solar in the electricity mix, coupled with the sharp increase in sales of electric vehicles (which are expected to quadruple by 2025), represents an opportunity for Member States to increase their commitment to the use of renewable electricity in transport.
