European Parliament is ready to resume negotiations with EU Council on appointment of European Chief Prosecutor

12/09/2019 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 12 September, the new European Parliament set up a team of MEPs to negotiate with the EU Council on the selection of the future European Chief Prosecutor. By choosing the Chair of the LIBE Committee, Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar (S&D, Spain), its Vice-Chair, Maite Pagazaurtundua (RE, Spain) and the Chair of the CONT Committee, Monika Hohlmeier (EPP, Germany), the European Parliament has maintained the same structure as the team formed under the previous mandate (see EUROPE 12209/4). Negotiations between the two institutions, which had been at a standstill since April, will thus be able to resume. At the beginning of July, the new Parliament had already reaffirmed its support for Romanian candidate Laura Codruţa Kövesi (see EUROPE 12300/24). According to our information, things could also move on the EU Council side, which supports the French candidate Jean-François Bohnert. A new vote at the meeting of Member States' ambassadors to the EU on Wednesday 18 September is possible. (MF)
