In Airbus case, amount of compensation awarded by WTO to Washington will not be known until October

The summer has passed without the publication of the amount of compensation to which the United States is entitled in the dispute with the European Union over the support granted to European aircraft manufacturer Airbus.

The contents of the World Trade Organization (WTO) arbitrator's report will probably not be known until October. The text has been sent for translation and will then be sent confidentially to the parties. The panel will then meet to make its conclusions public and endorse Washington's list of countermeasures, according to several sources.

At the beginning of April, Washington announced the publication of a preliminary list of sanctions, worth nearly 10 billion euros per year (see EUROPE 12233/15, 12257/13, 12287/12). This list will be finalised as soon as the value of the estimated damage is revealed.

However, in mid-November, US President Donald Trump is also expected to decide whether to impose new tariffs on foreign car imports, in line with the findings of the investigation report under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, sent to the White House on 1 February (see EUROPE 12256/12).

Mr Trump may therefore decide to kill two birds with one stone and increase his tariff duties for the EU only once, noted some observers. (Original version in French by Hermine Donceel)
