19/07/2019 (Agence Europe) – The new European Parliament officially indicated on Thursday 18 July that it is maintaining its support for Romanian candidate Laura Codruţa Kövesi for the post of European Chief Prosecutor, although the process has become more clouded within the EU Council with the withdrawal of France’s support for the French candidate Jean-François Bohnert (see EUROPE 12298/15). At the request of the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament, the President of the institution, David Sassoli, sent a letter to the EU Council informing it of this decision. “Ahead of the informal meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Ministers in Helsinki (see other news), the Parliament wishes to renew its commitment to Laura Codruţa Kövesi as the European Parliament's candidate for European Chief Prosecutor”, he said in a statement. The co-legislators hope to be able to resume negotiations soon. (MF)
