The next trilateral negotiations (Russia, the European Union and Ukraine) on the transit of Russian gas to Europe via Ukrainian territory will resume on 19 September in Brussels, said European Commission Vice-President for the Energy Union, Maroš Šefčovič (see EUROPE 12275/16), on Monday 9 September.
“I am pleased to announce that I will host the next round of the trilateral gas talks on 19 September. I am convinced that progress would send a strong positive signal to the market as well as consumers ahead of the winter season”, says the European Commissioner on his Twitter account.
The gas transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine expires at the end of 2019 and the two countries cannot agree on what to do next.
Last May, the Ukrainian gas giant Naftogaz lodged a complaint with the Commission against the Russian gas company Gazprom for abuse of a dominant position on the European gas market (see EUROPE 12250/19). (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
