09/09/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 9 September, Europol announced that it had dismantled, in cooperation with the Portuguese police, the second largest European counterfeit money network on the dark web. Five people were arrested and charged with counterfeiting and organised crime. Counterfeit banknotes were seized throughout Europe, including in France, Germany, Spain and Portugal, worth more than €1.3 million. As a result of the investigation, eight domestic and non-domestic searches were carried out in Portugal. Law enforcement authorities seized 1,833 counterfeit banknotes worth a total of 69,930 euros. In addition to financial support, Europol provided the Portuguese authorities with analytical and operational support during the operation. (MF)
