09/09/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 9 September, the Commission indicated that the remaining balance of the €6 billion allocated to Turkey under the Refugee Facility would be "disbursed shortly", with "€5.6 billion having already been paid out". Migration spokeswoman Natasha Bertaud was reacting to new statements by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who on 5 September threatened to "flood Europe" with migrants if the country does not receive more funds for migration flows. The Commission has recently acknowledged that the EU-Turkey agreement/declaration is facing tensions, with new arrivals on the island of Lesbos, including 500 in one day ten days ago, and increasing pressure on refugee centres on the Greek island. Despite this, "we continue to support the implementation of the declaration," Mrs Bertaud added. (SP)
