09/09/2019 (Agence Europe) – The International Monetary Fund (IMF) reported on Monday, 9 September, that the current Chief Executive of the World Bank and former European Commissioner, Bulgaria's Kristalina Georgieva, was the only candidate to replace Christine Lagarde of France, leaving for the European Central Bank (see EUROPE 12310/22). The board’s goal is to complete the selection process as soon as possible and at the latest by 4 October. For a time, there was talk of a nomination to compete with the European candidate from the United Kingdom, which wishes to leave the European Union, but this has not eventually materialised. Ms Georgieva's appointment requires an amendment to the IMF's Articles of Agreement to allow the applicant to chair the international financial organization despite her age, 66. (MB)
