23/04/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission condemned “in the strongest terms” on Tuesday 23 April the murder of Northern Irish journalist Lyra McKee on the evening of 18 April during clashes in Derry in Northern Ireland between police and republican dissidents. “The murders of journalists will never be forgotten”, continued Mina Andreeva, the institution's spokesperson, whose work is “essential” in defending the European Union's values of “democracy, freedom and the rule of law”. The EU negotiator for Brexit, Michel Barnier, said via Twitter that this “tragic” murder was a reminder of how “still fragile” the peace process is in Northern Ireland. “We must all work to preserve the 1998 Good Friday Agreement” which, among other things, disarmed the Irish Republican Army (IRA). The New IRA has taken responsibility for this act. (SP)
