European Parliament validates Interinstitutional Agreement on public procurement of clean vehicles

MEPs, meeting in plenary session of the European Parliament, broadly approved (458 votes in favour, 107 against, 15 abstentions) the Provisional Interinstitutional Agreement on the revision of Directive 2009/33/EC on promoting public procurement of clean vehicles.

This agreement was reached by representatives of the European Parliament and the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union on the evening of 11 February last, during a second meeting of interinstitutional negotiations ('trilogues') (see EUROPE 12192/24). This future new text responds to the European Commission's proposal in this field, presented in November 2017 as part of the second ‘mobility’ package (see EUROPE 11900/2)

In particular, the co-legislators agreed on minimum targets for the use of clean vehicles by public authorities. Once the text is adopted, Member States will have 24 months to transpose it into their national legal systems.

After this green light from MEPs in plenary session, the revised Directive must now be formally approved by the Council of the European Union. (Original version in French by Lucas Tripoteau)
