18/04/2019 (Agence Europe) – In a resolution on human rights in Cameroon, adopted by a show of hands on Thursday 18 April in Strasbourg, the European Parliament condemns the violent repression of post-election demonstrations and the arrest of 200 opposition supporters, including political leader Maurice Kamto (see EUROPE 12185/18). It calls for an independent and transparent investigation into the behaviour of police and security forces against demonstrators. Parliament demands the immediate release of all political detainees and urges the government to initiate a review of the electoral system before any new election in order to ensure transparency and credibility and avoid any post-election crisis. The latest presidential election that re-elected Paul Biya, who has been in power since 1982, was marred by suspicions of fraud and irregularity. (AN)
