25/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission decided on Thursday 24 January to send a letter of formal notice to Latvia for failing to transpose correctly EU legislation on safe management of spent fuel and radioactive waste (Directive 2011/70/Euratom). The Directive establishes an EU-wide framework for ensuring the responsible and safe management of spent fuel and radioactive waste - including that originating from non-power uses of nuclear and radiation technologies - to avoid imposing undue burden on future generations. These arrangements aim at protecting workers and the general public from the dangers arising from ionising radiation. Member States had to transpose the Directive by 23 August 2013. (LC)
