25/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission decided on Thursday 24 January to send a reasoned opinion to Italy requesting the transposition of the new Basic Safety Standards Directive (Directive 2013/59/Euratom). Member States had until 6 February 2018 to transpose it. This text modernises and consolidates the radiation protection legislation. It lays down basic safety standards to protect workers, members of the public and patients against the dangers arising from exposure to ionising radiation. It also includes emergency preparedness and response provisions that were strengthened following the Fukushima nuclear accident. The concerned Member State has two months to reply to the reasoned opinion and communicate its transposition measures; otherwise the Commission may decide to refer the case to Court of Justice of the EU.
