EU countries and private sector pledge greater energy market digitisation

EU member states, the European Commission and stakeholders in the European electricity sector signed the Tallinn e-energy declaration, the aim of which is to further digitise the energy market, on the sidelines of the high-level conference on the structure of the energy market in Tallinn on Tuesday 19 September.

The declaration, signed by Estonian Minister for Economic Affairs and Infrastructure and President in office of the Council of energy ministers Kadri Simson, Energy and Climate Action Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete and by private sector energy associations seeks to enhance cooperation between the public sector and companies to make sure consumers can find the best prices and service providers via smart digital solutions.

“Building the secure energy sector of the future requires broad cooperation among all stakeholders”, said Simson, arguing that “the follow-up to the signing ceremony is all about exploring the ‘no man’s land’ between digital and energy”.

“Eventually the solutions created for consumers have to be smart and simple enough to create interest in their consumption habits, and energy efficiency for the consumer themselves”, said Estonian Deputy Secretary General for Energy Ando Leppiman.

The structure of the energy market is on the agenda is on the agenda of an informal meeting of the Council of EU energy ministers in Tallinn on Wednesday 20 September (see EUROPE 11864).
