EU to observe presidential elections on 10 October

19/09/2017 (Agence Europe)The European Union is to observe the presidential elections in Liberia on 10 October.  High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini hopes the elections will be "credible, transparent and inclusive" in this country that came out of civil war two years ago.  Marie Arena MEP (S&D, Belgium) has been appointed head of the observation mission.  The core team of the EU election observation mission (EU-EOM) comprises ten observers and has been in Monrovia since 1 September.  It will remain there until the end of the election process in order to be able to present its report and preliminary recommendations after the announcement of the results.  On 14 September, 20 long-term observers were deployed in the country.   They will be joined by 34 short-term observers the day before the votes.  The EU-EOM will cooperate with international observers.  (AN)
