19/09/2017 (Agence Europe) – Peter Scherrer, the Deputy Secretary-General of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) expressed a certain dissatisfaction after the presentation of the European Commission’s industrial strategy on Monday 18 September (see EUROPE 11864). The trade union representative certainly welcomed the strategy but regretted that it did not contain any point on managing changes in the industrial landscape and the participation of workers, as well as restructuring and the destruction of jobs. He explained that, “Boosting competitiveness, skills and the single market is all good, but we also need to plan and achieve a fair and just transition”. He subsequently welcomed the project to set up a high-level roundtable of Business leaders and called on the member states to make a commitment to a new and strong industrial policy. (PH)
