Still much to be done on Digital Agenda

Brussels, 20/12/2012 (Agence Europe) - On 20 December, the telecommunications ministers of the EU continued their discussions on the draft regulation regarding approaches for the trans-European telecommunications networks - an essential element in the Digital Agenda for Europe. At this stage, the discussions still lack coherence and the Irish Presidency will have to deepen the debate - especially for the objectives fixed for broadband. As part of the mid-term review presented by the European Commission on 18 December (see EUROPE 10754), the Council held a policy debate on the mid-term review of the Digital Agenda for Europe and the next measures to be taken. The discussions showed that much remains to be done to meet the objectives fixed. European Commissioner for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes said that the list was long both for what has been done and for what remained to be done. She said that being honest, what had been done was not enough and that is was necessary to act and to invest massively in broadband. (IL/transl.fl)
