Brussels, 20/12/2012 (Agence Europe) - The EU and the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, Eurocontrol, have made a commitment towards developing greater cooperation. An agreement between the EU and Eurocontrol, a civil and military intergovernmental body that brings together 39 stakeholders, including all EU member states with the exception of Estonia, was signed on Thursday 20 December, following the Transport Council. This establishes Eurocontrol as the technical and operational counterpart of the EU for developing and implementing the Single European Sky. The EU remains responsible for regulating the programme. The agreement also seeks to avoid any duplication of tasks between Eurocontrol and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and stipulates that the EU can intervene in its reforms affecting governance. Eurocontrol will continue being responsible for air traffic control and managing the Single European Sky network. (MD/transl.fl)
