Brussels, 20/12/2012 (Agence Europe) - Two trialogues relating to the directive on Schengen governance and asylum procedures were held on Tuesday but have not yet given rise to agreement. Discussions will resume early January. For the text on asylum procedures, the last text of the Asylum Package still to be validated together with the Eurodac proposal on the fingerprints of those applying for international protection, discussions are still coming up against a number of points including the maximum time for processing asylum requests. The European Parliament, for example, wants to set a maximum time limit for certain categories of candidates such as those from war-torn countries, unlike the Council which does not wish to commit to a precise time, one source said. For the governance of the Schengen zone, negotiators must still find wording that will please the Parliament which has been legally ejected from the Schengen evaluation mechanism. Ministers had changed the legislative basis for the proposal in June and chosen to consult MEPs rather than allowing them to co-decide. (SP/transl.jl)
