Another €25 million for democracy, health and education

Brussels, 20/12/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 20 December, the European Commission approved a €25 million package of three programmes for Libya to support transition. The first programme for “Strengthening democracy, good governance and civilian culture in the security and justice sectors”, which is allocated €10 million, will help the government to deal with security, rule of law and reconciliation challenges. With €8.5 million, the second programme for “Libya health system strengthening”, will allow the improved delivery of public services, especially in primary health care and mental health care. Lastly, the programme for “Technical and vocational education and training delivery and development”, allocated €6.5 million, will focus on unemployed young people and will contribute to the integration of ex-fighters while fostering economic recovery.

These programmes will begin at the start of 2013 and are funded from the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI). There are currently 17 bilateral cooperation projects running for a total amount of €38.7 million, covering a wide range of sectors - public administration, health, education, migration, civil society development, reconciliation, media and human rights.
