Brussels, 20/12/2012 (Agence Europe) - The Greek authorities have completed the barrier designed to prevent Turkish migrants or migrants transiting through Turkey from entering Greece and the Schengen Area. Astride the Greek-Turkish border in the region of the River Evros, this barbed wire fence is about ten kilometres long and 3 metres high, the Greek media reports. Costing €3 million, the project had been announced in early 2011 under a former government and supported at the time by several member states. Not enthusiastic about the idea, the European Commission has always said it has not given a single euro in European co-financing for the project. The Greek-Turkish border is the main entry route to the European Union for illegal immigrants. Turkey and the EU are nonetheless willing to finalise a readmission agreement, whereby Ankara will undertake to take back onto its soil those migrants who arrived in the EU illegally, whether they be Turks or nationals from other countries, if they entered the EU via Turkey. In exchange, official dialogue would be granted to Ankara on a future visa-free regime that it has been requesting for a long time now for Turkish nationals. (SP/transl.jl)
