30/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - People who are charged in cross-border criminal cases should have the right to appeal and to obtain assistance with interpretation and translation, said the MEPs of the committee on civil liberties of the European Parliament, on Wednesday 30 September. In their adoption of the report by the Romanian member Renate Weber (ALDE), by 46 votes in favour, 4 against and 2 abstentions, the MEPs are stating that they want appropriate procedural guarantees to be included in a proposal of the Council of the EU, which aims to reduce the repetition of trials in various countries regarding crimes committed across borders and concerning the same person (EUROPE 9954). The consultation report will be put to the vote at the plenary session to be held in Brussels on Thursday of next week. (B.C./transl.fl)
