30/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - The Greens at the European Parliament are calling for the EU to support the findings of the report presented by the president of the commission of enquiry of the United Nations on the conflict in Gaza, Richard Goldstone, in Geneva on Tuesday 29 September, on the war crimes committed during the Israeli offensive in Gaza. This report concluded that both Israel and Hamas had committed violations of international humanitarian law and international law. "A related UN resolution is expected to be adopted on Friday, with some EU member states however reluctant to support the report's conclusions", state Green MEPs Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Heidi Hautala and Eva Joly in a press release. "EU member states must demonstrate that they are united and consistent in their commitment to upholding human rights (...). This support would underline the EU's engagement towards accountability for all who commit human rights violations. Justice is an essential element for progress on peace negotiations", they conclude.
