Brussels, 30/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 30 September, the European Commission decided not to raise any objections to the public funding of infrastructure developments in three Lithuanian airports, the international airports of Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga. The principal objective of these projects is to improve the facilities of the three airports and to bring the infrastructure into line with increasing demand. The total cost is 417 million litas (LTL) (121 million euros), around 53% to the provided by the airports themselves. The rest will be paid out of the European Regional Development Fund, the Cohesion Fund and national funds. The Commission took the view that the proposed measures were in line with Community rules on State aid, as the money will be used to achieve a clearly-define objective of general interest, without undue distortion of the market. The whole of the Republic of Lithuania is eligible for aid under the European regional development rules. (O.L./trans.fl)
